Cement-concrete pavement – brushed finishes

The decisive factor in these floors is their intended use. Cement-concrete pavement is subject to changes in climate and volume, road salts and other aggressive chemicals (use of concrete containing aerated aggregates), dynamic loads, impact, abrasion, and mechanical wear due to tire friction. The surface has to provide good grip, increased tensile strength, etc.

There are five basic types of cement-concrete pavement according to traffic load. Each of the five types has a specific minimal slab thickness. The minimal thickness of a one layer slab is 100 mm, unless the static calculations state otherwise.

Cement-concrete pavement can be reinforced using several types of materials. The basic type is a non reinforced slab complying with the Czech standard for cement-concrete pavement (CB I to V according to the Czech Office for Standards) which can be reinforced with one or two layers of steel mesh, or with dispersed fibres.

A cement-concrete slab with a single layer of steel mesh is one of the most widely used solution for all types of large area flooring. The main reason is that compared to other technologies and depending on the percentage of reinforcing material used, this solution allows to form relatively large blocks on an intermediate sliding layer without the need for dilatation joints.

The double steel mesh reinforcing is a technology used mainly in high load floors on a compacted base with a 200 mm minimal material thickness for the top slab. The mesh is embedded under both faces of the slab, 30 mm under the surface topside and 20 mm downside is considered sufficient.

The steel mesh can be substituted with dispersed fibres but careful consideration of various factors (local geology – undermined areas, type of underbed, etc.) is advised.

Striated or brushed cement-concrete pavement is used on driveways, footpaths, parking buildings, access ramps, outdoor storage spaces, etc.
